A Word From Our Founder

Several months ago, I found myself captivated by Psalm 17, where the Psalmist prays: "Wondrously show your steadfast love, O Savior of those who seek refuge."

We have intentionally positioned Children's Refuge in some of the world's most challenging places. We want to be where the need is greatest. And this year, between war, famine, and disease, the need has felt greater than ever. My prayer through Psalm 17 has been that when the hurting of this world are looking for somewhere to turn, they would find true refuge here and experience just how wondrous God's steadfast love is for them.

But I have also watched God work wondrously on our side, and so often, He does it through people like you. You may have given at a moment when you had no idea what was happening on the other side of your gift. You may never know that your generosity arrived at exactly the right time — providing food, medical care, a safe place to sleep, or a chance for a child to go to school. He chose to use you to be part of something wondrous.

That's what I hope you see in every story in this update: God providing in the middle of crisis, children thriving, homes growing, and incredible leaders carrying this mission around the world. Those leaders are heroes to me. Many of you know who I am — but through these pages and videos, I hope you'll come to know the people doing this work on the ground every day. Listen to their stories, hear their hearts, and please commit to praying for them.

God is working. And He is doing so in wondrous ways.

Meet The Children

Meet Precious

Precious is five years old, and her story is a beautiful reminder that God can bring hope from even the most difficult circumstances.

In 2020, Precious’ mother, who lives with cerebral palsy, came to Precious Kids Center while five months pregnant with twins. Tragically, one of the babies did not survive. Precious did—and from the beginning, those around her recognized something special in her life.

Today, Precious is thriving in kindergarten. She loves playing with dolls, swimming, laughing with friends, running, and simply enjoying the freedom to be a child.

Through the care of the home and the generosity of sponsors, Precious is surrounded by love, stability, education, and the hope of Christ.

What began in hardship is becoming a story of restoration and possibility.

Meet Bienfait

When Bienfait was born, his future looked impossible.

His mother died shortly after giving birth, and with no means to care for a newborn, his family was forced to make an impossible decision. This tiny infant arrived at our home in Goma fighting for his life. So vulnerable that, at first, no one even knew his name.

But God did.

Our dedicated team poured everything they had into caring for him. Feeding him, holding him, praying over him, and fighting alongside him through every fragile moment.

Today, Bienfait is a completely different little boy. He's healthy. He's in school. He's laughing, learning, and growing into the child God created him to be.

Bienfait was one of the very first four babies welcomed into our Infant Wing when it opened in 2022. Every time we see him running, smiling, and thriving, we're reminded that hope is never wasted.

This is why Children's Refuge exists.

To step into impossible situations. To protect the most vulnerable. And to watch God do what only He can do.

We're so thankful for little miracles like Bienfait.

Hope Amidst the Ebola Crisis

Even amid the Ebola crisis and ongoing conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, the work is moving forward in remarkable ways.

More children are finding safe homes, new leaders are emerging, facilities are expanding, and communities are gaining access to food, medical care, education, and clean water. In the face of uncertainty, hope continues to grow—and God is making a way for children and families to flourish.

Emergency Ebola Response

Through key partnerships, an incredible amount of aid has reached the region:

Food for the starving

Shipments have fed thousands of people at the most critical levels of starvation.

Life-saving medical aid

Donations have kept our clinic serving hundreds and supplied several area clinics, enabling them to offer free medical care.

Clean water

Critical in the fight against Ebola, clean water flows to thousands from our property, with new water stations at six surrounding orphanages.

Infrastructure

Building for the future:

Computer lab

30 computers are expanding what education can look like for our children.

Farm-grown sustainability

A pig farm is helping the home sustain itself, with chickens coming soon.

Community warehouse

Construction is starting on a small warehouse to house aid for the community.

A church

Shipped over from the States and soon to be built, it will double as a humanitarian distribution center on weekdays.

Expansion

In spite of everything, we've grown: 300+ children, close to 50 infants — now in the care of our two homes combined.

Room for 100 more children

Two major residential buildings are under construction and will welcome an additional 100 children when complete.

A place to gather

A large outdoor pavilion is being built to serve as a dining hall for more children.

You Packed It With Purpose!

Hope, Headed Across the Ocean

Our volunteers and their families showed up ready to Pack It With Purpose, and even the kids got in on the mission! They sold $700 worth of lemonade, with every dollar going toward helping children served by Children's Refuge around the world.

And then there was the container...

42,686 pounds of hope is on the ocean right now — one of two containers set to arrive in the DR Congo the first week of October. And just weeks ago, a shipment of medical supplies from a partner organization reached our teams on the ground.

We're not slowing down. The next container is already filling up, with everything needed to furnish the church and the two new buildings that will allow us to expand our care to 100 children. And another packing day is coming this fall!
